Press Conference: Launching the Hadith Encyclopedia– October 24th 2001
The Hadith Encyclopedia, a
major accomplishment in the revival of Islamic scholarship and printing
production, was unveiled at its launch in the Cleopatra Ballroom at
Semiramis Intercontinental Hotel in Cairo on October 24th 2001. The
collection, a beautifully bound edition exquisitely typeset with
digitally elaborated fonts based on those of the mushaf of King Fu’ad, is
the fruit of 15 years of editing, revision and research by a team of
scholars. Three hundred and fifty diplomats, scholars and international
journalists attended the conference. The Mufti of Egypt, Dr. Nasr Farid
Wasil, attended and stressed the importance of hadith studies. Thesaurus
Islamicus Foundation board members were on the panel, each explaining to
the audience aspects of the Sunna Project. On the panel, as
well, and in recognition of the historic importance of the event for
Arabic publishing and Islamic heritage, Mr. Hani Tolba, managing director
of al-Ahram Distribution Agency; Mr. Ayman al-Sayyad, managing editor of
Wijhat Nathar magazine and Mr. Ibrahim al-Mu‘allim, head of Arab
Publishers Association and managing director of al-Shorouk Publishing
participated actively. Healthy discussions between the audience and those
on the panel were thence brought forward at the end of the conference
when journalists and hadith scholars started asking their questions.
